If sick days are short notice leave and vacation days are advanced notice leave (which is the case in most offices I’ve worked in in the US), and you don’t have advanced notice of your car breaking down then you’d need to use the sick day, no? That’s what LW’s coworker is suggesting and they should also be familiar with any policies prohibiting that.

I was wondering, if no one had wanted to swap with me, what should I have done? My Uber driver suggested using sick time, but I wasn’t sure if that was a good idea ” I had a similar experience once where my childcare fell through unexpectedly for a day.
