It is there for them to pursue if they want it but they are not obligated to take it. Pressure from you is probably contributing to the grumbling more than having the system of test-for-more-money.

It’s a tool, you have to learn how to use it, and figure where/when it best fits in the writing process for your org. You can put limits on how it’s used, or dictate when in the process it’s used, etc. In my job, I use it only to develop outlines and very rough drafts.

In reply to Cj. There are lots of skills in a small food&beverage retail business that aren’t visible to customers. Opening and closing procedures, inventory, record keeping, dealing with suppliers, equipment maintenance, etc. Can you strip down the milk frother if it gets clogged? Can you make an espresso in X time, can you make a latte with art to X quality in Y time, can you make a suitable recommendation from the cafe’s roast selection in response to a customer request – plenty of *appropriate* things that might be categorised as “skills-based tests” for a barista.

In reply to Rogue Slime Mold. I worked at a coffee shop in college and I could see a test being used to asses skills for a raise rather than just observation. If you depend solely on observation to test that drinks are being made to recipe, then you’re limited to evaluating only the drinks that are ordered during that observation — it was rare during my afternoon shifts that anyone would order an americano, for example, but there was a weekday regular who always ordered it when I worked the open
In reply to Santiago. One thing to keep in mind: some employers will take a master’s degree into account when setting your salary, even if the degree is not as relevant to the job. So by leaving off the master’s degree, you may be leaving money on the table if/when you get to the offer stage.
In reply to pally. why am I not pursuing jobs related to my PhD? because there are (almost) no full time, pay more than poverty level jobs to pursue… Moved out of academia a couple years ago, and boy was it an uphill battle. My degree is helpful for the job I do, has let me move up quickly, but was not required. And it made me cost more. So it took a while to find a job.
In reply to Cj. There are barista competitions. I follow a few–Morgan Eckrott and James Hoffmann mostly, but a few others occasionally pop up. There are a LOT of technical nuances involved in coffee making at a certain level. Do you understand how grind size impacts ideal water temperature? Do you know the difference in flavor profile provided by an emersion brew (French press or the like) vs a pour over (V60)?

Also, a blunt truth: working at a privately owned coffee shop isn’t what most people would consider a *career* with long term plans for advancement; different people want and expect different things out of a job, and this may change in different life phases. Beating the churn of people rapidly quitting after a very short time is commendable and has almost certainly made the shop better for customers and workers alike.
In reply to Anon for this. Just want to emphasis waiting for the money. My mother in law passed last year and it took several months for the cash inheritance to come through. They need to wait for creditors to make claims, and maybe there are other things–some of it varies case by case. If LW has the funds to cover that, absolutely go for it, but if things are a little tight, hanging in a little longer or finding something part time/less stressful/etc might be a better move.
In reply to huh. Of course they CAN be tested. The question is whether they SHOULD be formally tested as opposed to other options. LW is literally asking what to do about the fact that their employees dislike the testing system, “consider options other than formal testing” is absolutely fair game.
