In reply to Confused Ray. It absolutely can be a thing. If the employer is worried you have any kind of cause for legal action (like that they laid you off right after you asked to take FMLA, for example, or they mishandled your sexual harassment complaint last year), they are often very willing to negotiate severance, in exchange for you signing a general release of claims.

In reply to Sparrow. And to add – the health system where I work tracks the rate at which schedulers are able to reschedule rather than cancel appointments! Which I think is terrible because it puts pressure on people to figure out future scheduling while possibly in the middle of the tough situation that caused them to cancel. Everyone (at the HCP’s end) acts like rescheduling is no big deal, but speaking as a patient, I have to have a back and forth conversation with someone, look
T he first time I had a panic attack, I thought I was dying. Not in a poetic sense. Literally. There was vomiting. Diarrhea. Trembling. Dizziness so intense I couldn’t stand. I remember lying on the cold bathroom floor of a hotel room in China, soaked in sweat, barely conscious, my heart beating like a war drum in my chest. I was alone. On a business trip.
In reply to Carmina. Exactly! When I worked medical reception, I sounded a lot like this employee, and I was always praised for my customer service. Just because the receptionist isn’t providing medical care doesn’t mean *Informed Consent* is any less relevant in this setting.
Applying for college can be overwhelming, and college counselors can help relieve some of that stress. “Independent counselors can be instrumental in guiding students through self-assessment , exploring diverse academic paths and identifying colleges that align with their individual needs and interests,” says Joel Bauman, Duquesne University senior vice president for enrollment management.“ This can lead to a more targeted and thoughtful application process.
LW1- This is a perfect case for Alison’s “approach management as a group” advice! Just because you’re white and therefore not a direct target doesn’t mean this isn’t a hostile workplace for you too iirc. You and coworkers have plenty of standing to push back. Make slow-walking the problem more uncomfortable than dealing with it, and it may be dealt with.
Our May obituaries also include a celebrity optician, a legendary blind guitarist who saw the world through music, and a renowned geophysicist who once worked with Mother Teresa.
In reply to Alessandra. You can do all those things *and* apologize. And I don’t think that acknowledging the mistake and apologizing will make people “remember” something they “forgot” I mean, yeah that might happen if they apologize a year later. But people actually do tend to remember this stuff. And what’s worse is that the bad impression stays long after the specifics are forgotten.

#3 A 10-year leak! That’s disgraceful. It sounds depressing and would likely be a health & safety violation my side of the pond (and the union wouldn’t tolerate it either) but I don’t know about the US. I bet if the leak were above a C-suite desk it would have been fixed within 10 hours I hope the renovation has indeed solved the leak.

In reply to Confused Ray. If you belong to a union then they’d negotiate for you, even for a “normal” redundancy, not ADA-related. As an individual you’d do better to have some way of bringing pressure on them, such as a retaliation or other violation of employment law, in which case a lawyer is a great help in negotiating a settlement, if you can afford one – but you can DIY.

In reply to Not Tom, Just Petty. It might work out extra well to have someone both at the top + “in the trenches” as it were – glad it seems to be working out for everyone honestly kind of exemplary really?

In reply to Me 3hree. With LW3, some commenters give the impression that they feel that the healthcare clinic has to be “purer” about money than the average business because it’s a healthcare clinic. It’s that anyone in a healthcare setting should know enough about informed consent to know that what they want “sounds” bad, because it *is* bad.
In reply to GrumpyPenguin. Same! I’m from Australia where we have socialised health care, but where gap payments are sometimes required and a parallel private system exists. I was VERY uncomfortable with the scripts suggested by the OP. I understand that this may be a cultural issue. However, if my medical provider sounded like those scripts, I would look for a new provider.
In reply to nnn. The amount of “bad for the client” varies a great deal between the options. Reschedule vs cancel? For most medical issues, rescheduling *is* better than canceling, so I have no problem with correcting the employee to only offer rescheduling. Put card on file vs pay each time? Many people cannot afford a large unexpected charge on their credit/debit card and want time to dispute it with their insurance before getting automatically charged for it.
LW1, I’m not going to let you off the hook, frankly. I don’t think you need to wear a hairshirt or punish yourself forever. It is possible that this blunder has irreparably damaged some of the warmer relationships you had with colleagues, and you can’t do anything about that but be professional and cordial. Like Allison, I think you should reflect on your remarks, and why you made them — and speak more thoughtfully in the future.
