I spent most of the past week in Seattle, Washington, landing there for the revived Work, Stress & Health conference , sponsored by the Society for Occupational Health Psychology (SOHP). Held on the beautiful campus of the University of Washington, the conference offered a multidisciplinary array of compelling panels, symposia, and workshops. I participated in two sessions and attended many others.
Everyone was emailed the yearly bonus numbers by our CEO just before Christmas, and they were pretty good! The rank and file like me were getting right around 10% of our salary on top of a quarterly bonus of around 3%. It was the early naughties, so that 13% worked out to around $4,500 in my case. And then one of the vice-presidents replies-all, complaining that he’s only getting 50 times as much money and asking why the company even bothers giving the peons bonuses if they’re going
Forgetfulness is costing you time, money, and a ton of missed opportunities. In the age of automation, it’s easy to underestimate the power of a well-trained human mind. But memory isn’t just a parlor trick, it's a strategic edge. Human memory is one of the most underrated business skills. Whether you’re managing people, leading sessions, or having high-stakes conversations, remembering names, details, and concepts can be transformative in building trust, absorbing knowledge, and driving perform
In November 2014, Jason Phillips, a fitness and nutrition trainer, was so broke that he couldn’t afford a cup of coffee. One year later, he banked a million dollars, and after 10 years, he founded Nutritional Coaching Institute and scaled it to a reported $15 million valuation. These days, he’s embarking on a new venture that promises even greater success.
In reply to Accountability Buddy. This is way too much emotional labour to ask of a friend. It sounds like he’s struggling with either setting his own boundaries or with asking for help in the appropriate places. He needs to decide whether he can self regulate or get proper help.
In reply to Seeking Second Childhood. I told my boss when I resigned that no one ever said on their death bed they wished they’d spent more time at work.

Upon inviting a group of work colleagues to karaoke via email, I had inadvertently invited the CEO out to karaoke too. It was a Recipient autofill mistake (think “Steve” instead of “Stevie”). I didn’t realize my error until a few days later. Perhaps the CEO knew it was a blunder on my part or maybe he was too busy to respond.
In reply to Healthcare Worker. It can be much more miserable for an adult than a child, so she shouldn’t expect to bounce back immediately! Thicker fluids like soup or melty ice cream are great, but also a good lip balm because of the constant mouth breathing while she heals.
In reply to qualia. Many coffee shops are just daytime caffeine bars. I’ve worked in both. The vibe is very similar. Social, casual, and thrives on repeat business. Sure, a Starbucks or something similar is less casual, but it’s still not insane to continue to frequent a place where you know and trust the staff. And to catch up when they’re not busy and chill on your iPad for a bit.
In reply to Accountability Buddy. I don’t think he understands what an accountability buddy is. That’s just a person who helps you hold yourself accountable for your own goals. Sometimes they join in (in which case, you’re their accountability buddy, too), but they don’t have to. You don’t have to refrain from drinking to be his accountability buddy.
Documents are the backbone of enterprise operations, but they are also a common source of inefficiency. From buried insights to manual handoffs, document-based workflows can quietly stall decision-making and drain resources. For large, complex organizations, legacy systems and siloed processes create friction that AI is uniquely positioned to resolve.
In reply to Squirrel Nutkin (the teach, not the admin). The band at the contradance last night included a cello, which is not typical and was a great sound. Lots of energy between the band and the dancers. Sweating buckets — shirt changes required –but so worth it.
In reply to RC. seconding the recommendation for Reefs. I bought mine in 2015 and they’re still going strong, though now that I live in Maine they get significantly less wear than in CA. They offer surprisingly good support for a basic-looking flip flop.
In reply to Humble Schoolmarm. I actually thought about Outlander when I read the question, because years ago before I went on vacation, a very straight-laced colleague of mine handed me her copy of the first Outlander novel, and said “this is a fun book you might enjoy over your vacation.” I did enjoy it but was a little surprised at how much sexual content there was!
In reply to asloan. This is what I do, and then make a big batch of pesto and freeze it. We’ve gotten into saving and starting our own seeds so I may give that a try before final harvest this year and save them to see if we can start new plants next year.
In the accounting world, staying ahead means embracing the tools that allow you to work smarter, not harder. Outdated processes and disconnected systems can hold your organization back, but the right technologies can help you streamline operations, boost productivity, and improve client delivery. Dive into the strategies and innovations transforming accounting practices.
In reply to No Tribble At All. Yeah…if you’re running the a/c regularly and there’s still that much humidity in your house it sounds like there’s something off. The a/c should have a pretty good dehumidifying effect. Only caveat would be if this is your first summer in the house, it could just be you’ve got a really damp house, but if this is worse than previous years, you probably have an issue with the a/c.
In reply to goddessoftransitory. I have a friend who is extremely well-read, reads a lot for his job, and has similar taste to mine. When I don’t know what to read I ask him lol.
In reply to Chaordic One. But it sounded like the crux of the original question was “does this level of humidity indicate my A/C isn’t working properly?” So the discussion of running fan only, while may be useful from a comfort perspective, doesn’t address what was being asked. Unless I’m still missing something.
In reply to Christine. Yay to greenbirdbrigade. Talon: baaaabybird, goodjob goodjob. And of course Augie. baconpancakes is part of our household lexicon now!
In reply to Red Reader the Adulting Fairy. This part. SIL said she had nothing to say, take her at her word. The only way to win with passive aggression is not to play.
In reply to sswj. Came here to say this. I can quickly check a gps but I can’t like redo a route or check for traffic or else I am nauseous until the car stops and for an hour afterwards. I get way too carsick to read for people. So now when I am a passenger I say it before we get going – that the most I can do is recenter the map or restart the gps app, anything more involved and people have to pull over.
In reply to Llellayena. This advice is excellent. I struggled with random fatigue when my son was young. I was (and still am) overweight but exercise and eat reasonably well. My GP at the time was utterly unhelpful – he once said “Fatigue is not a symptom. Come back when you have real symptoms.” So when I got ear pain, I went to him and that started a cycle of antibiotics and appointments with an Ear Nose and Throat consultant.
In reply to Accountability Buddy. Be careful. I had a friend who was trying to get sober and if I ordered a drink, he would drink then be like « but you were drinking too » where I had two mocktails and he blacked out. AUD is a progressive disease. I would say something like « only you can choose how much you drink » and hold the line. I don’t drink and this same friend would try to force me to drink to have a buddy.
In reply to allathian. Oh, and I finished Vera. The way she simply disappeared with just a note to her former subordinates was somehow so on point for the character that I laughed.
In reply to Ellis Bell. Braised red cabbage is my new go-to vegetable dish! 6 cups of thinly sliced red cabbage, one thinly sliced sweet onion, one peeled thinly sliced apple. 1/8 to 1/2 tsp of cloves, 1 to 2 Tbsp of brown sugar, 2 to 3 Tbsp of apple cidar vinegar, 1/4 cup of water. Combine all ingredients in a pot, bring to a boil with lid on. Turn heat down until it is just barely simmering, and simmer for 1 and 1/2 hours.
In reply to Squirrel Nutkin (the teach, not the admin). Just saw my senior kitty drinking from her new water fountain! She’s skittish and doesn’t love change, so very glad she’s come around to it!
In reply to Chauncy Gardener. Yes, the berries here are amazing this year! I have blueberries and raspberries just on the brink, and there are thimbleberries and saskatoon berries and huckleberries; so many berries! I will go out and pick lots, and freeze them for jams and chutneys and jellies that I will make in the fall, when work slows down and I have reliable access to my kitchen!
In reply to Emily Byrd Starr. Hm. I see your point, but I don’t agree. I am a married woman; if I had a crush on a man, I would be cautious about spending time with him regardless of whether or not he could ever be interested back. That’s because I don’t want to nurture crushes–leaning into a crush instead if away from it takes a person away from other, more important, (and most importantly) reciprocal relationships.
