I n recent decades, mental health has become one of the most widely discussed issues in public discourse, health policies, and clinical practice. The explosion of psychiatric diagnoses, the exponential rise in the use of psychotropic medication, and the proliferation of narratives about psychological wellbeing are just some of the symptoms of this new centrality of emotional suffering in contemporary society.
Every assistant knows the feeling: you start working with a new executive and, within days, you can sense whether this is going to be a […] The post How to Build a Powerful PA/EA–Exec Partnership in Just 30 Days first appeared on The Assistant Room.
Frontline workers, those non-desk workers who do some of the most demanding jobs, don’t always feel connected to the company they work for. In fact, many say their team has an entirely distinct culture of its own and that communication with their company leaves a lot to be desired. According to a new global survey of 7,550 workers from Workvivo by Zoom , while frontline workers make up 80% of the global workforce, many say they don’t get the recognition they deserve.
Too often, remote employees are forgotten in the onboarding experience — killing their engagement before they’ve begun. But with the right welcome, new hires can thrive no matter where they’re located. Your first day at a new job is a lot like your first day of school. You’re excited, nervous, and hoping you’ll click with a new friend. But when half your team is working from their kitchen table and the other half is in conference rooms across three time zones, a warm welcome gets a lot trickier.
Forgetfulness is costing you time, money, and a ton of missed opportunities. In the age of automation, it’s easy to underestimate the power of a well-trained human mind. Whether you’re managing people, leading sessions, or having high-stakes conversations, remembering names, details, and concepts can be transformative in building trust, absorbing knowledge, and driving perform

Over the past three decades monitors have colonised desks in workplaces, homes and in public spaces, with the presence of a screen often signalling that something productive is taking place. This assumption may now be under quiet revision with implications for technology, management, and workplace culture. The growing maturity of artificial intelligence agents is having an incremental but significant impact on how we work.

Although job quality appears to be on the rise, a quarter of UK workers – an estimated 8.5 million people – say their jobs have a negative impact on their mental health (25 percent) or physical health (24 percent), according to the CIPD Good Work Index 2025. The latest poll claims the negative impact of work on wellbeing has remained high for many people for the eight years the survey has been running, despite improvements for some employees on certain areas of job quality.

As frustrating as it can be for job seekers, technical recruiting and online job searching today have become largely about keyword searches and matches. That may help filter out unqualified candidates.
Ever since the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 (known as the GI Bill) was signed into law, earning a college degree became the ticket to American prosperity. By 1956, nearly half of World War II veterans had taken advantage of the education and training available through the benefits, which included assistance with tuition, books, and even housing.
Documents are the backbone of enterprise operations, but they are also a common source of inefficiency. From buried insights to manual handoffs, document-based workflows can quietly stall decision-making and drain resources. For large, complex organizations, legacy systems and siloed processes create friction that AI is uniquely positioned to resolve.
A new report from the UK Government’s Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) has highlighted a range of issues with the UK’s current parental leave system and urged the government to address them as part of its proposed review. The report, Equality at Work: Paternity and Shared Parental Leave , argues that the existing system requires substantial reform to better reflect the needs of modern families and working parents.

If you’re getting married soon (congrats, by the way!), you might be wondering whether you should invite your co-workers to your wedding. Perhaps you want to invite some co-workers but not all, and you’re concerned about excluding someone. Things can get even trickier when you consider your hierarchical position within the company: Should you invite your boss?
In reply to bamcheeks. I agree, but it does have to be combined with some type of ability to know what’s ok to mention and what’s not — and that’s a learned skill!
“Everybody’s replaceable.” That headline from a recent Wall Street Journal article may sound like a warning, but it’s also a wake-up call. It signals a clear shift in how some corporate leaders are talking about work, employees, and the role of human connection. In short, Corporate America’s long-running war for talent is sounding more like a war on talent.
In reply to Wendy Darling. “Women in [field]” panels are another form of marginalisation! It flattens women’s professional expertise into “but what about being a woman , eh?”. And it causes a lot of people to not attend that panel because they think it’s not for them. If a conference really wants to tackle structural inequality, they can work to make sure their other panels include women and non binary people, and people of different skin colour, sexuality etc.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several antipsychotic drugs as an augmentation strategy for “treatment-resistant depression,” including aripiprazole (Abilify), quetiapine (Seroquel), and olanzapine (Zyprexa). But in a new study , researchers found that these drugs were no better than trying another antidepressant—and that they come with increased risk of death.
In reply to Not A Manager. What I can’t get over is, even if OP had to be let go, there was no reason for not treating her decently, with a generous severance package and glowing references.
LW #1: I wonder whether you’d be willing to support an event on “women in tech” as someone who cares about the issue rather than as a representative of “women in tech.” I have a male colleague that I often nominate to serve on these kinds of panels because he is a thoughtful and deliberate advocate for inclusion. It can be powerful to see people from all genders standing up for each other.
In reply to Aggretsuko. Possibly. A reasonable workplace would have delivered those instruction in a normal upfront way, not as a bunch of people yelling at a subordinate for hearing something *and* mocking them for taking steps to stop overhearing.
In reply to UKDancer. Whereas as a lesbian in the UK, I’ve always felt uncomfortable and marginalised by the assumption in women’s groups that everyone has kids and a husband, and this is what we all want to talk about. I no longer go to women’s groups.
If you have people internally who could do the job, then you’d be able to promote one of them in the interim whilst doing proper interviews, so it wouldn’t necessarily need to be a whole gap if Adam does choose to go, and at least it’s transparent
In reply to Glengarry Glenn Close. Just came here to say I would watch the hell out of this movie. Even if the one-night-stand couple don’t reunite, this has got a heck of an arc.
In reply to Michigander. Yeah, that’s such a weird take. There is a guy I went to grad school with and shared an office with for years (though NOTHING happened even close to the OP’s story). We lost touch when I dropped out of grad school. I have been curious what happened to him and have googled him over the years. Today is the first time I was able to figure anything out.
In reply to bamcheeks. You reap what you sow. LW: trying to be fair and sensitive to everyone, ultimately ends up in better job at better company. OldJob: pushing her out, ultimately loses two good people to competitors.
In reply to Not A Manager. This. The company effed with his life, too. Guess what, guy! We want you so much that we destroyed the economic safety of your child. What if OP had to leave the state for work after they pushed her out? Yeah, your kid is in a different time zone, but dig this, bro, you get a parking allowance. Mad respect to him for the assist to OP.
In reply to Myrin. “inhumane and cruel way ” I wrote this above, but it’s I’m still reeling. “Jacob, don’t worry. We made sure that you won’t have any interpersonal issues in your position that will hinder your career. We are looking out for you, my man. You know that woman who is raising your child? Yeah. We fired her.
