Gen Z and millennial campers are increasingly ditching franks and beans and sleeping bags for gourmet meals and feathertop beds on their adventures into the great outdoors, reshaping camping culture with their preference for glamping (glamorous camping) and all of the luxuries and amenities that make an excursion into the wild far from roughing it. ChatGPT Weakens Your Ability to Think, MIT Study Finds

Mad in America

Editor’s Note: Peter Simons did not use an LLM or any other AI in the creation of this article, either to summarize the study or to generate the text of this piece. A new study out of MIT has found that those who used large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to write an essay had significantly lower brain activation than those who didn’t. They were also unable to remember anything they had “written” just minutes ago.

In reply to Squirrel Nutkin (the teach, not the admin). I hosted a surprise birthday party for my husband last night and it went very well! I am not by nature a planner, but I coordinated everything with our friends for over a month. My husband knew people were coming over, but I framed it as a 4th of July party, and he bought it. Four of our friends came over around 2 pm, and stayed through the evening.

In reply to Monkeying Around for Money. This cheapo Home Depot by-the-foot carpet with the rubber backing is what I’ve always used to line the back cargo area of my SUV. For me, the key is to put it in UPSIDE DOWN. Then the two carpet surfaces lock together, and the new “top” is rubber— water proof, easier clean, AND non-slip. I might let it air out in the sun a few days before bringing inside a house (because I hate that rubber smell) but I think it would work great for this purpose.

In reply to MissB. If you’re doing homemade mac and cheese, maybe use white cheese (white cheddar, jack, mozzarella, Romano?) and jazz it up with spinach, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes. I’ve done this with also chicken and bacon, but it would be real good without the meat too, and it’s a little nicer than the standard yellow stuff. Alternately, a veggie lasagna or even lasagne rollups, depending on how fiddly you want to get.

In reply to MissB. Vegetarian baked beans would be nice for some more protein for the veggies. Bonus that it can be gluten free and dairy free if you need that. I’d do that in addition to the mac and cheese and cole slaw. If you are certain you are going to have a significant vegetarian population, maybe bake up some veggie burgers for those buns so that they can also have a sandwich?

You could cook the beans yourself in advance (easy if you have an Instant Pot) or open cans/drain/rinse, and this is a good time of year for fresh cherry tomatoes (cut them in half).

In reply to Chauncy Gardener. Ask your vet about Sileo gel, it’s a game changer! It’s basically the animal version of precedex (sp?) and it blocks those fear signals (that’s how it was explained to me). You rub it into their gums and after about 20 min my dog is super chill but not fully tranquilized either. The dispenser has a way to measure the amount, a “dot” for every 10 pounds.

In reply to Low Stakes Cooking Question. We have one with one big basket (unsure of size, it was a gift, we use it maybe almost once a week?). I feel like I would use it more if it were one of the ones shaped like a toaster oven, with multiple levels. Ours is bulky for its capacity, so we don’t keep it out; I think a toaster oven style one we’d keep on the counter and perhaps use more.

It’s the second (and sadly last) sequel to Bridge of Birds, one of my all-time favorite books. While not as strong as BoB, the story still charms.
