How Leaders Can Cope with ‘Crab Mentality’ in the Workplace

John Mattone

You’ve likely heard the metaphor: if you put one crab in an open bucket, it will climb out. But put a group of crabs together, and none will escape. Why? Because every time a crab tries, the other crabs will actively pull it back down. This isn’t just a story; this behavior is seen with live crabs. This is the crab bucket effect , a powerful illustration of crab mentality.

Work Life

You dream of quitting a toxic job , pivoting to a new career, or starting your own business. But there’s a financial reality to such a move: can you afford to earn less? In 2021, I quit a job as an executive at a tech company. I pivoted into content marketing and journalism, and, initially, I was earning about one-third of my previous salary. But I had spent months looking at our household budget, and was prepared to earn even less.

Grossly Flawed Paper Denies that Antidepressant Withdrawal Effects are “Clinically Meaningful”

Mad in America

A group of British researchers have just published a paper questioning whether withdrawal from antidepressants is ‘clinically meaningful’ and whether lengthy tapering is necessary when withdrawing. I’d like to provide some context and explain why these claims are false and dangerous. There is no clearer example of the dominance of the drug companies’ simplistic, pessimistic and unevidenced ‘medical model’ than the millions upon millions of us around the world now taking antidepressants in an att

They’re not cheap, but you might look into a satellite communicator (main brand I think of is Garmin, but there are probably other brands out there) or a personal locator beacon if you’re going to be in less-traveled areas. Those work when cell phones don’t have service (nothing is 100%, but satellites can certainly be picked up from a lot of places).

Representing the Brightest Stars on the Biggest Stage

Stephen Nedoroscik never expected to become a global celebrity. But, while competing for Team USA during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, the American gymnast went viral—and his life changed forever. Over the course of a few hours, Nedoroscik went from being an unknown, glasses-wearing, Rubik’s Cube-solving self-described nerd to a household name—with an endearing nickname to boot, the “pommel horse guy.

I’m in a reading group that focuses on books about religion. It’s an interfaith group where we’re all on the liberal side but serious about our faiths. I’d love to get recommendations for books that would be interesting and in some way challenging and might lead to vigorous discussion. So far we’ve read books that focus on the 3 monotheisms but we’re very much open to reading about other world religions — not books that just explain their beliefs and pra

It felt weird to hand over a bunch of personal medical info on the website — but my two prescriptions were $40 total, instead of over $400. Wow. Supposed to receive prescriptions by mail 10 days after your order is placed, so I’m hoping that part also goes smoothly.

Documents are the backbone of enterprise operations, but they are also a common source of inefficiency. We knew we needed lawn chairs so we put the chairs in the garage where we would be sure to see them when we left. You know where this is going… we were only about 20 minutes from home when we realized we’d forgotten them but it would have added over an hour to the trip to go back because there are not many exits on that particular interstate.
