Co-founder and executive chairman of Netflix Reed Hastings gets an annual 360-review via written assessment to which any employee can contribute. He wrote about his 2019 review in his book No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention , observing, “I find the best comments for my growth are unfortunately the most painful.” In a memo to employees, he thanked them for pointing out how he skipped or rushed over topics he felt weren’t worth the time.
In reply to Pay no attention… I’ve experience this twice in situations where the company WAY overpromised without checking with any of the SMEs, or looking at any schedules. In all subsequent meetings where they called it a “success” I interjected that what happened was not success, it was getting away with it. And we’d benefit from knowing the difference.
Thinking about your own death is not something most people enjoy doing. However, if you plan to pass on savings or assets, like a home, having a will is important in ensuring those items end up in the right hands. Still, according to a new survey, most Americans don’t have a will. The data, which comes from a Western & Southern Financial Group survey of 1,007 U.S. adults, showed that only one in four Americans has a will.
Forgetfulness is costing you time, money, and a ton of missed opportunities. In the age of automation, it’s easy to underestimate the power of a well-trained human mind. But memory isn’t just a parlor trick, it's a strategic edge. Human memory is one of the most underrated business skills. Whether you’re managing people, leading sessions, or having high-stakes conversations, remembering names, details, and concepts can be transformative in building trust, absorbing knowledge, and driving perform
I need help with an issue at work I work for a major grocery retailer at one of their fuel centers The fuel center I work at is attached to one of their grocery stores There are only 3 employees working at the fuel center The hours of operation at the fuel center are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. 7 days a week That means there is an opener from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a closer from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. 7 days a week Every morning the opener has to do the following… Uncover the fuel pump handles since all of them
O n May 7, JAMA Psychiatry published a review of the efficacy of antipsychotics over the short-term, and if the article is carefully parsed, the results reveal that there is no good evidence that antipsychotics provide a clinically meaningful benefit , compared to placebo, over the short-term. This might seem startling to the public and to prescribers, as it is understood to be a given that antipsychotics are effective in curbing acute episodes of psychosis, but in fact it is a finding that can
In reply to AnotherOne. You may need to change the way you’re asking the question. Essentially, you’re asking, “How can we get the next new hire to commit to us for 2-3 years, but we can still drop them before that if it doesn’t work out?” So it may be what you can offer them that will make them stay that long, not just getting them to say that they will.

In reply to BellStell. Unfortunately it’s not quite that good (2.5 over 2 years) but yeah. Assuming the company does ok, which honestly isn’t an absolute given.
In reply to Purple People Pleaser. Lots of good advice about saying no upfront, but if you have said yes it can be good to follow up after and let them know it was a stretch for you and not just something you did for fun. “Hey, I was able to rearrange things to make this happen, but I can’t do that regularly. Next time you’ll need to plan to [get a petsitter/have your kid drive you/whatever].
Documents are the backbone of enterprise operations, but they are also a common source of inefficiency. From buried insights to manual handoffs, document-based workflows can quietly stall decision-making and drain resources. For large, complex organizations, legacy systems and siloed processes create friction that AI is uniquely positioned to resolve.
In reply to PX. I saw a tweet describing this as coconut culture vs peach culture. People in some cultures take a long time to warm up to strangers but then they’re dedicated to the friendship and want it to become deep and long lasting (like getting past the hard shell of a coconut into the softer flesh). People in a different culture are happy to have light and often fleeting friendships, but don’t open up into deeper relationships (like the soft flesh of a peach surrounds the hard
In reply to Kay. Absolutely. This also depends on the type of property, in some countries non-citizens aren’t allowed to own real estate, for example. Inheritance tax can also become a factor for even fairly small amounts, in Finland inheritances below 20k euros are tax free, and if you inherit 30k, you pay tax on 10k.
In reply to Lilian Field. Moms Demand organizes around gun violence. 5 calls is an easy way to follow what your representatives are doing in Congress See if you can get people to commit to calling their local representatives about a specific issue – have some information around how to do it. Most people are worried about it until they find out you talk to an aide who is just going to write down that a constituent called and what they called about.
In reply to Been Living Abroad For Ages. I live aborad and have since 2008 and yes you must FILE but not lay unless you make over 120,000 USD as a single person currently and this amount increases each year but a bit. But you must file them and the forms that show you are exempt and living abroad etc and file FATCA papers and other forms.
In the accounting world, staying ahead means embracing the tools that allow you to work smarter, not harder. Outdated processes and disconnected systems can hold your organization back, but the right technologies can help you streamline operations, boost productivity, and improve client delivery. Dive into the strategies and innovations transforming accounting practices.
In reply to Accounting. Depends on how much, what form it is in, the country, their laws and what you want to do with it. Any one of the big accounting firms are going to have more resources for different countries, but you may need to look for someone in your home country and an attorney/accountant in the other country. You start by asking around for recommendations, doing research for highly rated firms, making calls and asking questions about your situation.
In reply to HannahS. I agree with everyone else’s recommendation to paint swatches in the actual rooms, and I’ll add that the blue you see when looking at the outside of the windows is likely due to reflective coating (to reduce solar heat gain), not “tint”—it probably doesn’t make the light coming in look bluish. (My windows have pinkish-purple reflectivity, but it doesn’t affect the light in the house.
In reply to Irish Teacher. I enjoy the interviews where people talk about their unusual jobs – the one where they worked in a horror fun house was really gripping.
My 18 year old son recently graduated high school. This is his last summer at home until he goes to college in the fall. He has a friend from high school who moved across the country because his dad is in the military. Son’s friend group all kept in touch with their friend, including pooling their money to fly him back and forth to attend their high school prom junior and senior years.
In reply to Lifelong student. Think about going on strike. I did that a few years ago for the holidays: Just announced that I would buy presents that I wanted to buy for people, but other than that, I was opting out of the whole season. Things got done. People stepped up. Sort of. Enough. And yes, the book Fair Play is excellent for balancing out this kind of burden-carrying!
In reply to Lilian Field. I live in a red county, and I’m jealous that your Democratic party has an office! As long as somebody is not known as a Dem, they get elected to all the nonpartisan stuff, but in the regular elections, it’s a totally losing battle. Very depressing after a while. We did have 600 people show up for No Kings, though, which is *amazing* in this town.
In reply to Foila. I used to check Hoopla items out and then sometimes not even watch them, but then I learned that my library is charged per use for Hoopla. So now I just wait for the library DVD.
In reply to Hard water. Have had one for 40 years. Needs a maintenance/clean tuneup every year. The installer comes out for this (was $125.00 last year). The water isn’t ‘slippery’ Softness is is dependent on the setting. Units are programmable so the softening is consistant. The installer will do this. Given we also have a well I figure my costs aren’t any worse than paying for water.
In reply to Squirrel Nutkin (the teach, not the admin). Recognizing that I have reliable air conditioning when we’re already getting temps into the 90s. Every year, I honor you, Willis Carrier.
In reply to ElastiGirl. I’ve gone on strike a few times. I was curious as to how long it would take of X not being done before a certain someone would notice or deal with it. I’ve never been able to hold out long enough to get an answer, unfortunately. I still question my decisions after discovering this information. I should probably leave so as to avoid these kinds of ridiculous things, but I like my current lifestyle and the goals I can achieve.
In reply to Red Reader the Adulting Fairy. Thanks for the recommendations. LMM has shared that it was a childhood dream come true to write music for a Disney movie.
In reply to Foila. Not a librarian just a user, you can’t renew a book on Libby if someone else has a hold on it, so if the system let’s you renew that’s because no-one else has asked to have it.
In reply to Irish Teacher. My favorites are the “wait, what?” where the LW has a coworker doing something weird but harmless, like the extreme hairstyle changes or treating everyone like kindergarteners. I also love the ones where a super unreasonable LW writes in clearly expecting validation and Alison is like HELL NO, as well as the ones where the LW is drastically underreacting to something horrible and gets tons of validation and support.
